Natty didn’t feel like going straight home after his meeting with his mum, and told Lupe to take him to Jukie’s. They pulled up across the road, and Lupe killed the engine, settling in to wait for Natty.

‘Come in if you want,’ Natty said to his bodyguard. ‘I won’t be long either way. I just need to decompress, and I don’t want to bring my issues back to the house.’

‘I’ll meet you in there,’ Lupe said, his phone to his ear. As Natty nodded and walked away, Lupe spoke.

‘Send another car to shadow us. We’re at Jukie’s, parked across the road.’

When Natty entered the location, it was mid-afternoon, with multiple regulars and some youngsters in the main room. Once people saw Natty, the room quietened down, the energy instantly shifting.

Natty scanned the room, noting how nervous and squirmy everyone appeared. It didn’t surprise him. He knew the reputation he had, but he wondered if it was the ultimate sign that he had outgrown his roots, dressed in his flawless suit, looking the part and dominating the room. No one met his eyes other than a few of the cockier youngsters, and even they looked away once Lupe stood close by.

Glancing at the youths, Natty was reminded of Jaden, inwardly deflating, knowing more uncomfortable conversations awaited with his teenage son. Before he and Lorraine married, Natty had officially adopted Jaden. It had been plain sailing, but as Natty and Lupe walked to the bar, he realised he was foolish to expect things to stay the same. Jaden was growing up and trying the world. Natty had to allow him to do it.

At the same time, he’d never expected his son to be interested in the streets. Natty had been different. He’d kept his worlds separate, and never worn his status on his sleeve like his dad had.

He needed to come up with a game plan to keep Jaden away. Reaching the bar, Natty instantly got the attention of the bartender.

‘Get everyone what they want. It’s on me,’ he said. Those who heard him called out their thanks, several hurrying to line up to place orders. ‘Tell Jamie I’m here too.’ After Natty ordered a brandy and coke, Lupe refusing a drink, the pair sat down in the corner. Despite the free drinks, the atmosphere was still lukewarm with his presence.

Natty sipped his drink for a few moments, gathering his thoughts. He hadn’t expected Lupe to say anything, so when the guard spoke, it startled him.

‘Would you like to talk about your mum?’

Natty’s eyes widened as he assessed Lupe. They were cordial, but this was the first time his bodyguard had approached him like this. He shook his head.

‘I’m just figuring out a few things in my head.’

Lupe nodded.

‘It’s never easy when family are involved.’

Natty agreed, wondering what Lupe’s relationship with his family was like, but choosing not to delve. He quietly savoured his drink as the vibe in the room slowly shifted back to normal. A few minutes later, Jamie came out of his back office with a wary smile.
